When most people think of The Gideons International, the first thing that comes to mind is Hotel Bibles. But Scripture outreach is just one of the three ways we help members carry out their calling to win others for the Lord Jesus Christ. Our purpose is to equip Gideons and their wives to share the Good News through 1) strengthening one another, 2) spreading the Gospel message, and 3) sharing God’s Word.
Hotel rooms may be the most recognized place to find a Bible from The Gideons, but our outreach extends far beyond those walls. From schools and hospitals to fairs and other public venues, members place and distribute Scriptures across some 200 countries, territories, and possessions. As a result, tens of millions of lives are touched through God’s Word every year.
Why does an association of more than 240,000 Christian business and professional men—along with their wives—devote so much time and energy to sharing God’s Word? The answer is simple: The Gospel Is Our Mission.
The word Gospel means “Good News.” And that Good News is this: God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Scripture tells us: The Gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. (Romans 1:16)
This is vital because all have sinned (Romans 3:23), and the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). How are we saved? Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13)
The Gospel matters because it changes everything—it brings hope, and it transforms lives. In a world full of anxiety, brokenness, and uncertainty, the Gospel offers an anchor in life’s storms. The Gospel found in Scripture is the only message that points all mankind to a rescue from sin and eternal separation from God.
For over a century, people have shared with us their real-life stories of finding freedom from sin and lasting peace through the power of the Gospel. Many of these transformations began when they encountered a copy of God’s Word placed or distributed by a Gideon or Auxiliary member.
