The message arrived at 10:30 p.m. A sudden vibration. A glowing screen in the dark. Willie, a Gideon, glanced down and saw Marlo’s name.
Willie and Marlo had met months earlier during a citizens’ law enforcement academy where Willie shared God’s Word, his testimony, and prayer. Then occasionally, they would check in about ongoing health concerns. But this message was different. Marlo was writing from the emergency room, terrified she was having a heart attack. The tests were negative, yet the fear lingered.
In pixels on the screen, the questions tumbled out. What is happening to me? Why do I feel this way? Where do I turn?
Willie felt the weight of the moment. He had been praying for an open door to share the hope of Christ with Marlo—and suddenly, through a phone screen, that door stood wide open.
Willie asked gently, “If something had happened tonight . . . would you be ready to meet God?”
Marlo’s reply came quickly, honest and unsure. The conversation deepened. One line of Scripture led to another. Text after text, Willie guided Marlo through the truths of the Gospel—sending verses, answering questions, waiting between those quiet three dots that signal a searching heart.
For more than an hour, God used a glowing screen to shine His light into Marlo’s fear. Before the conversation ended, they agreed to meet later that week—for the first time since their academy class.
Meeting in person at a small local restaurant a few days later, Marlo arrived looking lighter, expectant.
Willie opened the same New Testament he had used while texting and walked Marlo through God’s plan of salvation again—not rushed, not pressured, simply opening Scripture to see Christ clearly—before giving her the Scripture for her own.
This time, something settled in Marlo’s heart. And she bowed her head and received Jesus as her Savior.
“God allows moments like this to get our attention.” —Willie
The fear that once filled Marlo’s messages was now replaced with peace.
Today, Marlo is active in church and faithfully studying God’s Word—one more life transformed because someone was ready to share Scripture in the exact way God opened the door.
