SOWING THE WORD

God's Word Available for Those Who Reach for It

By: Admin | 10/12/26, 5:55 PM

Alone, severely injured and more than a thousand miles from home, 18-year-old Aden found comfort waiting beside his hospital bed.

Aden was driving alone on US-63 in Missouri when his life changed in an instant.

A catastrophic car accident left him with severe, life-threatening injuries. He had suffered a traumatic dissection of his carotid artery and required emergency surgery.

Aden was transported to CoxHealth Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri. There, more than a thousand miles from his home in upstate New York, he would spend nearly two months recovering.

For weeks, Aden could not walk. He could not even turn over in bed without help.

Medical equipment surrounded him. The physical pain was constant, and the emotional weight of lying alone in a hospital room, trying to understand how drastically his life had changed—and what might come next—was just as heavy.

Then Aden found a Bible placed by a Gideon.

The Word Was There in the Longest Nights

During the long, quiet hours—especially at night—Aden began to read.

He wasn't reading casually or simply looking for something to pass the time. He was searching for something steady enough to hold on to.

He found it in the Psalms.

Those words met Aden in his pain, fear, and uncertainty. On some of his hardest nights, reading only a few pages helped settle his heart and gave him a measure of peace when everything else felt overwhelming.

Suddenly, Aden didn't feel so terribly alone.

“Your Bible was there when almost nothing else was. It was steady. It was honest. It didn't pretend that suffering was simple or that everything would be fine. It just pointed toward something bigger than what I was going through, and on the worst nights, that was enough.”

—Aden

The Word Is Still with Him

Aden was discharged at the end of February 2026. Now back in New York and living with a close friend's family, he continues the long process of recovery.

More surgeries lie ahead. So does physical therapy and the difficult work of rebuilding his life. But during the darkest and most uncertain days of his life, a copy of God's Word was already waiting.

This is why Gideons and Auxiliary remain committed to placing Scripture wherever people may need it—in hospitals, hotels, schools, and countless other places around the world.

No one could have known when that Bible was placed who would eventually find it. No one could have anticipated the night Aden would reach for it.

But God knew. And when Aden needed comfort, God's Word was there.
